A great way to say thanks to friends and family

For most people who get married, parents and families members work incredibly hard to help them achieve the perfect wedding day. A really special way of thanking relatives or friends for their efforts is to give them a ‘parent’ wedding photography album i.e. a smaller copy of the main wedding album.

The parent album makes a beautiful keepsake that is also an enduring record of the wonderful day. These can be prearranged at the time of booking your wedding photography with A&G or they can be ordered later on after the wedding. Some couples have also made them Christmas gifts for friends and family.

The parent albums come in a couple of different sizes. There are 15 x 20 cm albums which come as a pair or the smaller 10 x 13 cm books which come in a set of 4. Prices are very reasonable, to find out more about our album & package prices click here.

If you’re working to a tight budget then A&G Wedding Photography can work with you to come up with a size and format of album that suits you. For further information, please click here.

Woodhall Manor, a privately owned house, is not only a stunning retreat but also a fabulous wedding venue. It is set is a truly beautiful part of Suffolk, close to the Heritage Coast.

The Hall itself is beautifully presented and the interior makes a fantastic backdrop for a wedding. Woodhall Manor is also such a romantic place in which to be married, thanks to the magnificent landscaped grounds and idyllic walled gardens. Woodhall Manor really can seem to deliver the fairytale wedding and it’s really magnificent from a wedding photographer’s point of view too – as such A&G Wedding photography always enjoys working here!

There are a number of ways in which you can put some fire in the belly of your wedding.

There are a number of ways in which you can put some fire in the belly of your wedding. As a Suffolk wedding photographer, prospect wedding organisers often ask me about what other couples have done that really added sparkle to the Big Day so here are some ideas for you – all following a sparky theme…

Lamps & fairy lights add radiance to your Suffolk wedding and are a fire-free option..

1) Sparklers

Indoor sparklers can be a great way of embellishing your wedding cake – this is particularly effective at winter weddings. If aspects of the evening wedding reception involve being outside then having sparklers available for guests (children only with close supervision) can make for a stunning visual effect against the night’s sky.

2) Chinese Lanterns

These are quite simply beautiful although a word of warning here – beware of thatched houses! One Suffolk wedding I photographed was in one of the county’s most quintessential villages, which is steeped in thatched cottages. As the Chinese lanterns were lit, it began to drizzle with rain and they failed to take off as well as they might and there were a few gasps as the floating vessels – each with a scantily clad live flame – came perilously close to some nearby thatched roofs! So I personally think Chinese lanterns are best in a situation where the wedding reception is taking place in a wide open space on family owned land. Alternatively, it might be wise to warn the neighbours! Chinese lanterns really do look stunning and rather inspiring as they set off into the sky – they work well at dusk or in a full night’s sky.

3) Candles

Candles can be a cost effective way of adding light and atmosphere to the wedding. Tea lights and floating candles can be purchased in bulk and help create an atmospheric and romantic backdrop to the celebrations.

4) Fireworks

There’s no denying it, this is not the cheapest of options for adding a spark to a Suffolk wedding and it is important that someone who really knows what their doing is in charge! Nevertheless, I have been the wedding photographer at a few Suffolk weddings where fireworks have featured. They did provide a real grand finale to the big day and were extremely popular with the happy couple and the guests too.

5) Fairy Lights and Lamps

If it’s a fire-free option that you’re after then consider careful use of fairy lights and/or diminutive lamps to add radiance to your Suffolk wedding. These can be great solutions in wedding venues that might not be so keen on too many naked flames, or at family weddings where there are lots of children.

A magical winter wonderland wedding!

There is something very special and magical about a winter wonderland wedding! Especially when it’s also spent with your closest friends and family and set in a stunning location. That’s exactly the feel that this couple created with their special day.

The day started with the getting ready shots. Generally getting ready shots tend to be just final touches to the bride such as the veil going on and applying that last bit of makeup etc, it is also nice to be able to catch the bride with her family/bridesmaids before leaving for the wedding ceremony.

The wedding itself took place at the church of St Peter & St Paul in East Harling Norfolk. As the wedding was late afternoon, there was just enough light to capture the bride & groom leaving the church and heading off for their reception venue.

The reception venue was very special to the bride & groom as it was set at the brides home in Suffolk. As the guests arrived they had a lovely walk through a small candle lit woodland area before entering the main house for the bridal line and some welcomed drinks.

The evening meal and entertainment took place in a stunning marquee provided by Weatherill Brother Hire Ltd. The marquee was very well lit creating a great atmosphere for the meal. The night was finishes off with some amusing speeches, live music and dancing!

As a wedding photographer, I glean all sorts of information – here are some ideas for brides to keep in mind…

As a wedding photographer, I glean all sorts of information – here are some ideas for brides to keep in mind…

Always choose the most comfortable wedding shoes you can find.

Select shoes based on comfort over aesthetic appeal as ultimately, unless you are wearing a short dress, few people will see your shoes but you will have to spend up to 8+ hours in them and much of that on your feet and some of that dancing!

Make sure that your dress and your bridesmaids’ dresses all fit perfectly

While this may seem obvious, it is worth considering this point. When trying on your dresses – even after they have been tailored to meet your needs – try walking, turning, sitting, even dancing and be sure that everything stays in place. It’s no fun to spend your entire day having to rearrange your dress – you want to be as relaxed, confident and comfortable as possible. If you’re in the slightest doubt at your final fitting, tell your dressmaker so he or she can make some last-minute alternations if needs be.

A beautiful wedding at the Bury Cathedral and Thurston Grange

It’s a gem of Suffolk and is at the heart of Bury st Edmunds and it also played host to this Suffolk wedding – St Edmundsbury Cathedral, which dates back to the early eleventh century and has undergone significant renovations in the last few years, provided a stunning backdrop for the marriage of Adam and Rebecca.

The happy couple and their guests then enjoyed a reception at The Grange Hotel in Thurston. Despite rain during the marriage ceremony, which was audible during the service, by the time the happy couple walked back down the aisle following their marriage they were greeted outside by glorious sunshine.

It was perfect timing and provided an excellent opportunity to take some pics in the Abbey Gardens, much to the enjoyment of bystanders who I always find love nothing more than watching the going-ons of a wonderful Suffolk wedding in progress. And many people will often tell the bride how beautiful she looks – it seems that the people of Suffolk love a wedding!

By the time we were back in our cars and on the way to The Grange Hotel, the rain had started again but luckily it stopped once more when we arrived. Although, so far as the wedding photography’s concerned, it’s always possible to work around the rain if necessary, it’s lovely when everything works out so perfectly!

It was a really lovely wedding, marked by (amongst other things) a beautiful service and brilliant speeches – congratulations Adam and Rebecca!

Here is some inspiration for alternative wedding cakes

Although sponge is often a more cost effective alternative to the traditional fruitcake, going all out and having the three- or five-tier wedding cake can be an expensive option. Here is some inspiration for other ideas to consider, which may well prove to be less expensive too:

Cupcakes offer a great way of continuing your weddings colour theme

1) Cupcakes

You can layer up cupcakes on a three-tier cake stand to excellent effect. They look sumptuous are offer a tasty bite-size morsel for your guests. At one Suffolk wedding we photographed many of the guests had made the cupcakes – some of them even catered for dairy free diets and so on; everyone followed a colour theme and the result was very successful.

2) Chocolate or cheese stack

Instead of having a wedding cake, cheese or chocolate lovers may prefer to adorn their wedding stand with luxurious truffles – one or two per guest – or a range of cheese, biscuits and grapes. A whole Stilton provides something good to cut in place of the traditional ‘cutting of the cake’. A savory alternative may also provide a welcome break after pudding.

3) Cheesecake

There are many lovers of this pudding and a cost effective solution might be to combine the third course of your wedding breakfast and your cake into one cheesecake. Each layer could even be a different flavour.

4) A Suffolk wedding can go French!

Macaroons come in a whole host of colours and look really effective layered up on a cake stand – they are also really tasty!

5) Fruit

A healthy and colourful option instead of cake is to provide an opulent stand of fruit – it may be a case of having a ‘picking of the fruit’ rather than a ‘cutting of the cake’ element to the wedding!

Here are a couple of wedding planning ideas

As a Suffolk wedding photographer, my clients i.e. couples who have literally just organised a Suffolk wedding, are in an unparalleled position to provide hints, tips and advice to those planning a wedding in Suffolk. Here are a couple of ideas from them to you.

What Jo and Graeme say…

Jo says: “We had 18 months to organise our wedding and although it felt like heaps of time it does go by incredibly fast and there are so many things to get done. I think the best tip I got was from a friend who’d got married the year before and she said from the moment you set your date, try to do something towards your wedding every week – don’t leave blocks of time in which you’ve done nothing towards it. It was such great advice as it’s much better to plan the wedding with a ‘little and often’ approach rather than weeks of inactivity punctuated by mad rushes of frenetic activity.”

What Rachel and David say…

“The best thing we did was to proactively make time on our wedding day to spend five quiet minutes together – just us – to catch up and really take in the day. Our whole wedding day was lovely and really special and although it was so nice to have all of our friends and family there, those five quiet minutes together really stand out in our minds when we look back on our wedding day.”

It's important to proactively make time on your wedding day to spend time together

A Sunny, Summer, Suffolk Country Wedding

What is better than a sunny, summer, country wedding? Well that is exactly what this lovely couple had in mind when they were planning their wedding in Suffolk and it all turned out perfectly!

The day started off with getting ready shots of the bride at home and some shots of the fabulous marquee, which was decorated with a vintage summer garden and sweet theme. Everything looked great and even the weather was playing ball!

Next stop was the Lavenham Church, which has a fabulous entrance with a long path leading through the very well kept gardens up to the church, which allows for some great shots of the Bride & her Father making their way to the doors.

After the service, the newly married couple take some time to greet all their guests before making their way down the path for a large confetti throwing session and finally into the waiting horse and carriage.

The horse and carriage then took the couple through the picturesque village of Lavenham before turning through the fields for a bit of cross country and heading for their reception venue.

Once at the venue, there was plenty of time for Bride & Groom to enjoy the company of their friends and family before a few formal group shots to mark the day, followed by a relaxed walk together for a few photos.

It was then time for everyone to make their way inside the beautiful marquee for some food and evening entertainment of speeches and dancing. A great example of a Suffolk Country Wedding!

With some quick thinking, disaster can be averted

Through a Wedding Photographer’s Eyes – Common Mishaps and Spontaneous Solutions

As a Suffolk wedding photographer, I have been to many weddings – most run without a hitch but every now and again, I have witnessed the odd mishap. Don’t worry though, the good news is that in every case a solution was swiftly found and put into action. Thanks to some quick thinking, in every case disaster was averted and very few people even noticed! Here are a couple of glitches that I’ve seen first hand…

Quick thinking with the wedding flowers can avoid potential disasters.

1) Flowers Not Arriving…

At one wedding, there was seemingly a major disaster – I don’t know all of the details but the result was that the flowers did not arrive as expected on the eve of the wedding! By the time I arrived to do the wedding photograph the following day, the potential calamity of a flowerless ceremony and reception had been avoided thanks to some quick thinking and supportive friends, family and neighbours. The bride had kept calm and together with a posse of helpers had bought up seasonal flowers from all sorts of places. In addition, those with particularly abundant gardens had donated as much flora as possible. The result was a Suffolk wedding rich in local and seasonal flower arrangements, which looked stunning. The bride had made her own bouquet and it was lovely and simple. Although the whole situation had created a bit of a last minute rush, in hindsight the bride felt that her flower arrangements were extra special and personal; in the end and the whole episode had added to her wedding with everyone pulling together and solving the flower challenge!

2) Melting Wedding Cake…

As a wedding photographer, I am no cake expert but I have picked up some useful bits of information. I believe that traditional fruitcake can be more stable than softer sponge and this is something that’s definitely worth discussing with your cake maker in more detail as it may affect your choice. At one Suffolk wedding, they had a beautiful sponge wedding cake but in the heat of the marquee – it was a scorching, midsummer’s day – it began to melt and took on a similar posture to the leaning Tower of Pisa! Thankfully, the caterer at the wedding had enough cooler space that the cake could be gently disassembled and put safely in the chiller. Eventually, when the bride and groom were ready to cut the cake, it was carefully reassembled and brought out again and few people were any the wiser.

Wedding speeches can be brought forward in the event of a delay on the food being served.

3) Food Served Late…

One Suffolk wedding had a spot of bother in that it took ages to serve the food. Admittedly, it was a large wedding with over 200 guests eating. There appeared to be a lapse, which meant that by the time the last table got their starters, the first table had finished the main course. The plan had originally been to finish the meal – starter, main course, pudding and coffee – and then to have the speeches. Actually, however, the father of the bride took the spontaneous decision to change the order of things so the guests would not be seated and waiting for too long. As soon as the main courses were served, he advised me as the wedding photographer that the speeches (which I needed to capture) would take place. This gave the catering team the chance to quietly catch up on the service while everyone was distracted with the speeches and they served puddings and coffee in one go and everyone finished the meal together and on time. Ultimately, it all worked out and everyone loved the food and enjoyed the speeches too, judging by the laughter!

Moral of the Stories

Don’t panic! If something does go wrong at your wedding then there’s no need to get flustered, it will work out fine in the end and could even end up contributing something unique to your Suffolk wedding.
